Nandrolone (nalone) and Testosterone (testosterone) are both anabolic steroids (AAS, Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids), which are widely used in the fields of medicine and fitness. However, these two hormones differ significantly in their chemical structure, mechanism of action, effects, and side effects.
### 1. **Chemical Structure**
- **Testosterone**: It is the main male hormone produced naturally in the human body. Its molecular structure is 17β-hydroxyandrosten-4-en-3-one.
- **Nandrolone**: It is a derivative of Testosterone. The chemical structure lacks a carbon atom at position 19, so it is also called 19-nor-testosterone.
This change in chemical structure makes Nandrolone's metabolism and receptor binding properties in the body different from those of Testosterone.
### 2. **Anabolic and Androgenic Effects**
- **Testosterone**: It has both significant anabolic effects (promoting muscle growth and protein synthesis) and strong androgenic effects (affecting sexual characteristics such as hair and genital function).
- **Nandrolone**: Mainly enhances anabolic effects, and its androgenic effect is lower than Testosterone.
Nandrolone is commonly used to treat osteoporosis and sarcopenia conditions because it is gentler on muscle building and has relatively few side effects.
### 3. **Metabolic Properties**
- **Testosterone**: It is easily converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by 5α-reductase in the body. This form of androgen is more active and is associated with side effects such as hair loss and prostatic hypertrophy.
- **Nandrolone**: Mainly reduced to dihydronalone (DHN), its androgenic activity is much weaker than DHT, so it has less stimulation to sebaceous glands, hair and prostate.
### 4. **Side Effects**
- **Testosterone**: Due to the high androgenic effect, it may cause hair loss, acne, prostate hyperplasia and other problems. In addition, it is easily converted into estrogen by aromatase, which may cause gynecomastia.
- **Nandrolone**: Aromatase activity is low and the probability of conversion to estrogen is low, so the risk of breast development is low. However, its metabolites may have a certain inhibitory effect on sexual function.
### 5. **Medical and Non-Medical Uses**
- **Testosterone**: Commonly used to treat male low testosterone, sexual dysfunction, gender reassignment therapy, etc.
- **Nandrolone**: More commonly used to treat muscle loss due to disease or aging, it is occasionally abused among athletes to promote strength and conditioning gains.
